Thomas P. Tully’s unique and vibrant background outside of being an attorney, is a big part of what makes him the stellar attorney that he is. He has spent the past several decades developing a career in the legal industry as an owner, manager and consultant of businesses, sales, politics and law. Tom’s education to do these things and the experience he’s gained from them, are not the only things that add to his ability to be an excellent attorney. Three roles that he has consistently played throughout his varied career that enable him to be an excellent attorney are those of- leader, motivator and creative facilitator for positive change.
A few of the many things that make Tom a standout among his clients compared to other attorneys of his caliber, are not just his several advanced degrees and breadth of legal and business experience, it is unusual to find an attorney who has the kind of dynamic personality, intuitive communication skills and a creative intellect that Tom does.
Prior to coming on board with the Law Group of Iowa, Tom established several different businesses, including opening his small, Tully Law Office, P.C. for injured plaintiffs (on St. Patrick’s Day 2012, in honor of his Irish heritage). He has also owned or managed several retail businesses, a fine dining restaurant, appeared in Hollywood films and a television movie; and developed, and still manages a retail playing card company. As well, he has served as the assistant Secretary of State for Iowa.
Even before Tom officially obtained his law degree, he operated the successful legal consulting business of Attorney Technical Resources and had the opportunity to assist some of the most prominent trial attorneys in the Midwest and surrounding states. A highlight of this part of his career was when Tom had the honor and privilege of spending over a year working with the renowned civil rights attorney, Mr. Gerry Spence of Wyoming, on his very last civil rights trial. Tom’s ongoing trial business has given him a unique and highly beneficial opportunity to prepare and participate in dozens of mediations as well as to serve the role as “second char” with some of the area’s top trial attorneys in over 70 trials.
It is no wonder that such a talented, educated, intelligent, compassionate and empathetic person comes from an accomplished and caring family that has a deep background in business, art, politics and public service. While growing up in the nation’s hub of political discourse and change, Washington, DC, he spent every weekend absorbing the richness of the Smithsonian Institute’s many special exhibits and permanent collections. Tom’s mother, Joan DuBay-Tully, is a gifted professional artist. When his family returned to their home base in Dubuque, Iowa, his father and roll model served as a successful Mayor of Dubuque and was a respected business person.
Tom’s upbringing and adulthood filled many different work experiences, other interests and endeavors, and his ongoing passion for learning, helping others and technology- as well as his entrepreneurial, creative, and cross-cultural skills- all come together to enhance his effectiveness as an exceptional attorney.
Tom lived in an array of locations in the midwest and on the east coast before settling in to make his home in Des Moines/Polk City. He lives with his wife, Dr. JoAnn Tully, and their two adult children live in the area. Outside of his passion for the work he does as an attorney and consultant, Tom enjoys politics, jazz and comedy clubs, golf, scuba, cooking, electronics and travel, to name just a few of his many enjoyments in life.
Tom’s educational background includes:
- Computer Engineering, Architectural Engineering & Industrial Engineering – Iowa State University
- Business Administration – William Penn University
- Juris Doctorate – Drake University Law School
